Parwanipur
Birgunj is the most important entry point from India to Nepal and it is a prominent industrial town. Parwanipur is a satellite town of Birgunj, and many factories are situated in this area. Jyoti Group of companies is one of the oldest and renowned companies of this place. As a part of the Employees’ Welfare Undertakings of the Company, Jyoti Group wanted to establish a school in the vicinity, for the children of the factory workers in which admission would be open also to children of other factory workers and surrounding villages. The company owners approached the CST Fathers through Msgr Antony Sharma with the request of establishing a High School there. They offered to donate five acres of land for this purpose without any major condition. Since the beneficiaries were mainly the children of the factory workers and of the villages of the catchment area, CST Fathers felt very positive about the offer. A MOU was signed between Jyoti Group of Companies and Nepal Little Flower Society on 1 December 2003. However, due to the Maoist Insurgency in the country during that period the Fathers could not start the work immediately. Fr Thomas Thalachira was appointed the first Superior of the Ashram and the Principal of the School. The SABS Sisters of the Kanjirappally Province also joined the Mission in 2005 to collaborate with us in the pastoral and educational apostolate. On 24 April 2005 the school was inaugurated in an existing building of the Himal Iron of the Jyoti Group. Msgr Antony Sharma SJ, the then Prefect Apostolic of Nepal , blessed the new school and Mr. Padma Jyoti, the Managing Director of the Jyoti Group of Companies inaugurated it in the presence of many Fathers, Sisters, parents and distinguished persons of the place. In the first year 104 children were granted admission from LKG to Class One. Our presence in Birgunj has immense pastoral benefits too although the intention of the donor of land was mainly educational. There are around 30 Catholic families in this quasi parish. Even before the Mission in Parwanipur was established, pastoral care for these Catholics was rendered by Little Flower Fathers from Narayangarh and Khairahani. Our area of pastoral service is extended to Simra where SABS Sisters have a convent and school.
