The presence of CST Fathers in Basti began in 1980, with the permission of Most Rev. Bishop Patrick D’Souza, then Bishop of Varanasi and the first CST Priest to work in Basti is Fr. Francis Thekkumkattil. Initially, our Fathers resided in rented houses until 1985. Fr. Sebastian Thundathil started St. Basil’s School on 2 January 1984 with 9 children on rolls, initially in a rented building at Pachperia in Basti town. After one year, the school was shifted to another rented building at Pickora in Basti. A small plot of land was purchased behind the Civil Court in 1985 from Mr. Ghanshyam Das Lekhmani and Basil Bhavan was constructed. Most Rev. Bishop Dominic Kokkat blessed Basil Bhavan and handed over the Basti Mission to CST Fathers on 03 July 1987 and declared Basil Bhavan as Ashram of CST Fathers. The school was shifted to Basil Bhavan in July 1987. A larger plot of land was purchased at Khirighat in December 1989 (the present plot) for the School. The Parish of St. Konrad, Germany, through the mediation of Rev. Fr. George Kalladanthiyil CST, who was General Councillor and Secretary of the Mission, supported the construction of the School building at Khirighat and also to establish a new Mission Station at Kalwari. Eventually, the new building for the School was constructed and blessed on 09 November 1991 and shifted to the new campus. On 28 November 1994 School got temporary affiliation to the CISCE Board, New Delhi and the permanent affiliation in the year 1998. The School Campus expanded with purchases of more land and better infrastructure development took place over a period of time. The School celebrated its Ruby Jubilee in 2024. The Ashram is the residence for the members of the province. By 1997 the Principal shifted his residence to the School campus and Basil Bhavan was the Formation House of the First Year Minor Seminarians during 2001-2003 academic years and Plus Two Students from 2004 July to September 2005 till the new Formation House was established at Walterganj. Development Initiatives By Social Animation (DISA) was registered as a Charitable Society and began functioning at Basil Bhavan from 24 September 2001. Basil Bhavan provides facilities for the Office of DISA and various Training Programmes. The Ashram’s Church serves as the Parish Church, coordinating various Parish activities, where there are 27 Catholic Families and 95 Members. Dominican Sisters of the Presentation, Bengaluru Province has been collaborating with Basti Mission since June 1997 and they are involved in both Schools at Khirighat and Nipaniya as well as in the Social Work Programmes of DISA. Deacon Franz Tirel, Christine Glade and Siegfried Schmid from the Parish of St. Konrad, Germany along with Fr. George Kalladanthiyil CST, visited Basti and Kalwari Missions on 25 November 2023 to get Feedback on the present status of their Project. They were at St. Basil’s School, Khirighat, where we gave a warm welcome and presented an appraisal of the status of the mission activities, not only of Basti and Kalwari, but also Harraiya, Ikauna and Kalyan Bhadarsa as the offshoots of the Project they supported in 1990 onwards. The seed money they invested in these Missions became very fruitful and rewarding. They were very happy to see the progress Little Flower Province made in the Missions.
