Raxaul

The proximity of the Diocese of Bettiah to Gorakhpur and the warm invitation of the Bishop of Bettiah, motivated Little Flower Province to extend our interventions in the State of Bihar. Staying at Birgunj, Nepal, Fr. Sani Vadayattukunnel identified and purchased the first piece of 6.5 acres of land at Village Noniyadih, Raxaul in East Champaran District on 21 May 2013. Fr. Cherian Elavakunnel took charge of the station in 2015. The foundation stone for St. Basil’s School was blessed by Rev. Fr. Lawrence Paschal S.J. then Administrator of the Diocese of Bettiah and laid by Rev. Fr. John Kadaliyil CST, Provincial Superior, on 12 June 2016. In the same year a temporary Ashram was blessed by Fr. Jomon Mekkunnel of Nepal Vicariate in the presence of some of the Fathers of the Province. St. Basil’s School was started on 07 April, 2017 with a blessing and inauguration by Fr. John Kadaliyil CST, Provincial Superior of Little Flower Province, Gorakhpur. The School got Recognition from the Education Board of Bihar Government for Classes up to Class VIII. St. Basil’s School made steady progress and reached up to Class IX with 855 and 53 Staff Members. As there was delay in getting the Affiliation with CISCE, the Class IX Students of our School were registered at the School of Capuchin Fathers at Motihari by 15 September 2024. On 21 July, 2021, the Office Block of St. Basil’s School and the Ashram building were blessed by Most Rev. Peter Sebastian Goveas, Bishop of Bettiah and inaugurated by Rev. Fr. Sabu Kandamkettiyil CST, the Provincial Superior. A Teachers’ Quarters consisting of facilities for four Families was built in 2023 and one family is accommodated there. Sisters of the Sacred Heart (SSH) of Patna Province have been collaborating with us since 15 January 2024. At present they are accommodated at the Teachers’ Quarters till a separate Convent building shall be constructed. The School obtained No Objection Certificate from the Government of Bihar on 05 August 2024 and the school got affiliated to ISCE Board on 31st March 2025. Holy Mass is offered at Sunderpur Mass Centre about 07 kms on Sundays and about 50-70 Catholics attend the Sunday Mass. Sisters of Notre Dame (SND) have their Community and a School about 5 kms away from Noniyadih and Fathers from St. Basil’s offer Holy Mass in the Convent once a week. One more acre of land has been added to the Campus and infrastructure development is taking place rapidly. Contacts and rapport building exercises were made in the neighbouring Villages to initiate Social Work Programmes. Due to various reasons the efforts were not successful. However we are determined to resume the efforts to intervene in the lives of the poor through various rural community development programmes.
